Course Description:

Welcome to Language Arts III/IV. In this class we will be participating in a survey of British literature spanning the Anglo-Saxons to Shakespeare to now.  We will be reading various types of literature and writing about the pieces.  You will be learning about literary analysis, expository text, researching and understanding, along with some general convention use.  I look forward to working with each and every one of you as we explore British literature and its impact on societies around the world.

We will be covering the following topics:

Independent Reading

Anglo-Saxons

Middle Ages

Renaissance

Restoration & 18th Century

Romantics

Victorian

Modern

Classroom Procedures:

Behavior: I have extremely high expectations regarding your behavior.  You are nine months away from graduating from one stage of your life and moving on to being what society calls “grownups”.  Therefore, in my class I expect you to treat this year as practice.  You will need to be responsible for your actions (grades and behavior).  This means that while I am teaching, you will be listening – not texting, passing notes, sleeping, or throwing things in the garbage.  As far as cell phones go, if I see/hear it, I will take it.  Do not argue with school policy.

Assignments/Grading:  The grading policy is as follows:

              TESTS/PROJECTS/ESSAYS                 50%

              HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK/QUIZZES      50%

  • What does this mean?  I do not grade based on points.  Everything you complete is out of 100.  I will then average your tests/projects/essays grades to make one grade.  Then I will average your homework/classwork/quizzes grades to make another grade.  Once I have those grades, I will average the two together and you will have your overall grade for the quarter.  Every quarter we will start over.  You will automatically have an A to begin with.  Any Questions?

Supplies/Materials:

You will need the following supplies/materials to be successful in this class:

  • College Ruled Paper
  • Thumb Drive for storing research
  • Blue or Black ball point pens
  • Number 2 pencils
  • Highlighters
  • Composition Notebook for Journals

A Day in the Life:

You can expect consistency in my classroom.  Everyday will have the same expectations:

  • Start with a warm-up/journal when you sit down.  If you are not sitting AND working at the bell you are tardy.
  • Begin daily activities, usually notes first
    • You are required to keep notes.  If you do not, you will not do well on the tests.
  • Once a lesson has been delivered, you will have assessments to begin/complete at the end of class.

Class Rules:

I only have two rules in my classroom.

  • Be Respectful – this means that you will respect others, yourself, and school property.
  • No cheating – Buena has a very strict plagiarism policy.  If you plagiarize, you will receive a zero on the assignment, no questions asked.

Videos:

Throughout the year we will be watching various videos/clips for analytical purposes. No video will be rated above PG-13. Below, you will find a list of the videos I plan on possibly incorporating this year. This list is subject to change.

  • Hercules – this film will be used to introduce, analyze, and demonstrate understanding of the Archetype Hero Cycle
  • A Knight’s Tale – the film will be used to introduce, analyze, and demonstrate understanding of the Middle Ages, Geoffrey Chaucer, Chivalry, Feudalism, and many other characteristics of the time period reflected through literature
  • Macbeth - the film will be used to introduce, analyze, and demonstrate understanding of Shakespeare’s Scottish play
  • Hamlet - the film will be used to introduce, analyze, and demonstrate understanding of Shakespeare’s Danish play
  • Pride and Prejudice - the film will be used to introduce, analyze, and demonstrate understanding of the Regency Period of British Literature
  • Importance of Being Earnest - the film will be used to introduce, analyze, and demonstrate understanding of the Victorian Period of British Literature.
  • The Jungle Book - the film will be used to introduce, analyze, and demonstrate understanding of the early Moderns
